Does Pieces own what you create with it?

Only to a degree—Pieces's cited terms leave you ownership subject to license carve-outs or conditions.

Their words · Terms of Service

When you use our Services, you create and save your code, files, data, memories, content, and other information ("Your Content"). Your Content is saved locally on your device. By default, we do not store Your Content on our cloud; limited exceptions (such as optional cloud backup you enable, usage analytics you leave enabled, and data synced through connectors you set up) are described in our Privacy Policy. These Terms don't give us any rights to Your Content except the limited rights that enable us to provide the Services. To provide the Services, Pieces processes Your Content using a combination of on-device models and cloud-based large language models ("LLMs"). As part of forming, enriching, and summarizing your memories and generating chat responses, Pieces transmits relevant text, visual, and audio (or audio-derived) data from your device to a cloud LLM — either a default model provisioned by Pieces or, for members of an organization, a model provisioned by that organization via "Bring Your Own Key" (BYOK) — to be processed and returned to you. By using the Services, you give us your permission to access and process Your Content for these purposes. This permission extends to our legal successors, affiliates, and the trusted third parties with which we work. You grant us, our legal successors, affiliates, and trusted third parties a license to store (locally), transmit, parse, and display Your Content, and to make incidental copies, as necessary to provide the Services.
